Your barcode appears here as you type.

To sell in retail stores, EAN and UPC numbers must be registered with GS1. Print at full size and test-scan before a production run.

How to create a barcode

  1. 1

    Choose the barcode type

Code 128 for SKUs and labels, EAN-13 or UPC-A for retail products, Code 39 for badges and older systems.

  2. 2

    Enter the value

Type the number or text. For EAN-13 and UPC-A, OZO adds the check digit and warns you if one is wrong.

  3. 3

    Adjust the look

Choose the bar colour and height, and whether to show the number underneath.

  4. 4

    Download and test

Download a high-resolution PNG or an SVG for print, and test-scan it before printing labels.

Barcodes for products, stock and labels

A barcode turns a number into bars any scanner can read, which speeds up checkout, stocktakes and shipping. This generator creates the four most common linear formats and validates numbers as you type, so you don't print a batch of labels with a wrong check digit.

Where to use them

  • Retail products: EAN-13 or UPC-A with a GS1-registered number.
  • Inventory and SKUs: Code 128 on shelf and bin labels; list the same SKUs on your purchase orders.
  • Shipping: Code 128 for order or parcel numbers, alongside a packing slip.
  • Badges and assets: Code 39 or Code 128 on ID cards and equipment tags.

Frequently asked questions

Which barcode type should I use?

Use Code 128 for your own stock, SKUs, shipping and asset labels: it holds letters and numbers compactly. Use EAN-13 (worldwide) or UPC-A (US and Canada) for products sold in retail stores. Code 39 suits ID badges and older scanners.

What is a check digit?

The last digit of an EAN or UPC number, calculated from the others so scanners can catch misreads. Enter 12 digits for EAN-13 (11 for UPC-A) and OZO works it out; enter the full number and OZO checks it.

Can I make my own EAN or UPC numbers?

You can generate the barcode for any number, but to sell through retailers the number must be licensed from GS1, the organisation that issues product codes. For internal stock and labels, use Code 128 with your own SKUs instead.

What size should I print a barcode?

Print EAN-13 and UPC-A close to their standard size (about 37 × 26 mm) and never squash the bars. Use the SVG for print so the edges stay sharp, and keep a clear white margin on both sides.
